Important Considerations when Selecting a
Manual Wheelchair
It is very important to select
the correct style
the correct size.
We at Mobility Scooters and More are here to assist you
with wheelchair selection
and also any service you may need in the future.
Two Categories of Manual Wheelchairs
- Self-Propelled The individual user operates the chair. Large side wheels
- Transport/Companion The assistant pushes the chair. No large side wheels
Using a manual wheelchair requires upper body strength and a certain amount of stamina, depending upon the expected amount of use and the predominant location where the equipment will be used. Those who use self-propelled wheelchairs often become very proficient at doing. They generally require a good deal of upper body strength. The act of physically propelling oneself can be beneficial to overall health as the exercise can increase a person’s strength and endurance.
Manual wheelchairs are not for people with limited upper body strength because it is hard work on the arms.
People with breathing difficulties, high blood pressure, etc. may also have trouble with a manual wheelchair. Our experts can help you to determine the correct wheelchair seat, size in order to provide comfort and support. The wrong size wheelchair could result in back and leg pain, pressure sores and other issues.
Choosing a Self-Propelled Manual Wheelchair
Choosing a Self-Propelled manual wheelchair is done best when the individual who will be operating the wheelchair identifies the following-
- Amount of time during day the wheelchair will be used.
- Environment and terrain the wheelchair will be used most often.
- Users own individual strengths and weaknesses.
- Users weight and height.
Choosing a Transport/Companion Chair
There are three main factors to consider when looking for a transport/companion chair
- Ease of Transportation: Make sure the chair you select is easy to lift, fold and move into and out of vehicles.
- Comfort:Although companion chairs are not designed for all-day use, it’s important to find one that is comfortable. The most common seat width is 19 inches with additional models available in 22 and 24 inch seat widths. A cushion or pad can be used to make the chair more comfortable.
- Maximum Carry Weight: Make sure you check weight capacity before making your purchase. If needed, heavy-duty models are available for carrying higher than average weights.
Transport/Companion wheelchairs provide many advantages:
- Weight: Easies to transport the chair itself because they typically only weigh around 17 to 20 pounds, which is much less than a manual wheelchair.
- Storage and Transportation: Easier to store and small enough and fold to fit into the trunk of a compact car.
- Cost: Less expensive than self-propelled manual wheelchairs and power chairs.
Accessories and Extras
Other features to look for in a wheelchair include footrests, removable arms, padded arm rests, attendant-operated hand brakes, back pocket and more.
